Every once in a while, late at night, I get so bored that I watch an old World War II movie. (My only other choice is to survive some infomercial on abolishing the wrinkles from your face.)
When I view one of these old flicks, there’s usually a scene where a hand grenade is thrown into a room, or the tank, or maybe the foxhole–and even though there’s like four seconds before it’s going to blow up, the filmmaker takes the opportunity to give us a close-up of the explosive device so we’ll know it’s there, it’s dangerous and “people are gonna die.”
At that point, there are only three things that could be done–I mean, when a hand grenade has been tossed:
You can lurch back in horror and get ready to be blown up, hoping it’ll be painless. You can look at all your buddies, jump on the grenade and make yourself a human sacrifice. The third possibility is to put the pin back in the grenade.
A case can be made that the pin is long gone, but maybe it would be smart, if you were a soldier, to carry around extra pins on your belt, just in case. Yes, I am proposing a generic hand grenade pin that could be universally used to keep the damn things from blowing up.
Likewise, since things are too serious, and too many hand grenades are being thrown, I have a broadcast once a week where I lighten things up with humor, questions, and maybe even a little silliness in an emotional way of putting the pin back in the grenade. I don’t have the wherewithal to keep people from throwing grenades. It’s just that I don’t want to blow up. And God love you all, but I’m not gonna jump on the grenade so you can live on, comparing sushi restaurants.
The show is simple: a little time to talk some common sense, laugh a lot, play some music, and leave refreshed, with the idea that humanity isn’t hopeless–just has a tendency to act helpless.
